Aquifer Management and ASR
Ground Water Education Programs Since 1986
The
American Ground Water Trust (AGWT) is the leading promoter of
ASR as a strategy for aquifer management. The AGWT has
organized over 20 technical and policy conferences since 1999
with a focus on aquifer management. (Scroll down for link to
full list with program and presenter detail).
The AGWT is an independent “honest broker” in the
awareness – information – education process on ground
water issues. Aquifer management conferences have been held in
AZ, CA, CO, FL, NJ and WA.

WHAT
HAPPENS AT AGWT AQUIFER CONFERENCES? |
|
AGWT Aquifer & ASR conferences bring together
private sector, university and agency scientists,
engineers, planners, water-resource managers, policy
makers and concerned citizens.
Typical
Program Content:
S
Technical advances in the process of capturing, storing
and retrieving water
S
Investigations and modeling of storage/ recovery volumes
and water quality
S
Treatment technologies for recharge water
S
Comparison of environmental impact of aquifer storage
and non-aquifer storage solutions
S
Updates on existing projects, the latest engineering
designs and pilot testing results
S
Legal and regulatory authority over water management
options
S
Sources of recharge water (reuse, storm runoff,
desalination, seasonal ground water, etc.)
S
Assessing the economics of building surface storage dams
vs. recharge/ recovery options
S
Consideration of
new legislation or rules & regulations to facilitate
artificial recharge
|
|
WHY
IS THE SUBJECT OF RECHARGING AND AQUIFERS
RISING IN IMPORTANCE? |
|
The major drivers that are bringing attention to the
creative use of aquifers and ground water are:
S
Demographics:
US population
increasing at 6,000 per day
S
Competing
and Increasing
Demands:
Agriculture,
Industry, Drinking Supply
S
Environmental Challenges:
Sharing Resources
with Ecological/ Aquatic needs
S
Water
Storage
Dilemmas:
Dams and surface
Reservoir Sites are Expensive
S
Climate
Uncertainty:
Evidence Suggests
that Rainfall will be Less Frequent and
More Intense |
|
EDUCATIONAL
CHECK-LIST OF CRITERIA FOR ADVANCING ASR IMPLEMENTATION |
|
To advance acceptance and adoption of ASR and other
aquifer recharge strategies, the AGWT recognizes the
need to:
S
Educate
the public and elected officials
S
Showcase
aquifer storage success
S
Emphasize
science as the basis for water policy and regulations
S
Capture
the imagination of water managers and planners
S
Convince
regulatory authorities that ASR projects satisfy legal
issues
S
Frame
ASR as an integrated rather than a stand-alone
management solution
S
Keep
water experts informed about ASR innovations, solutions
and developments
